About Youth Mental Health First Aid

Did you know?

  • Nearly a quarter of teenage girls aged 14 have self-harmed in the past year. (Girls Attitude Survey, 2018).
  • Out of an average classroom of 30, 3 children have a diagnosable mental health problem. (Green, 2005).
  • In 2015, suicide was the leading cause of death for boys aged 5-19. (ONS, 2015).
  • 75% of all adult mental health problems start before the age of 18. (Kessler et al, 2005).

Would you know how to help?

The YMHFA course teaches you to spot the signs and symptoms of mental illness in young people, provide support on a first-aid basis and signpost towards other services; including both NHS services and third sector organisations as we realise waiting lists are very long for young people waiting on a CAMHS referral.

What will I learn?

On the two day course you will cover:

1.Introduction to Youth Mental Health First Aid

2. Depression and Anxiety in young people

3. Suicide and psychosis in young people

4. Self-harm and eating disorders in young people

5. Building resilience and moving towards recovery

How will I learn?

Sessions are run in groups of 8-14 people. The course is taught through a mixture of slides, debates, activities, videos, case studies so there is something for everyone and it is a great chance to network with people who do a similar role to you.
